Sam's BYU Graduation

Sam graduated from BYU this week with a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry and a minor in Business. I am so proud of him! He had a super hard major and so many things going on besides school (10 hours/week in a research group for two years, 20 hours/week as an Organic Chemistry T.A. for two years, weekly volunteering at the hospital and with Hospice, studying for and taking the MCAT, and probably other things I am forgetting!), and he still ended up with a 3.8 GPA. He is such a hard worker, and I am so grateful to have him and for the example he has set for our children to work hard in school, do their best, and set high goals.

He says he would have felt a lot happier on the day of the graduation had he known what the next year of his life had in store for him. Of course we would both be thrilled if he had gotten into medical school this year, but I have felt a great sense of peace the last month or so with the way our life is unfolding. I feel strongly that Sam didn't get in this year for a reason and that things will turn out for the best in the long-run.

He is preparing to apply again this June, and that is what has been occupying his time since graduating. For now, he is staying busy shadowing various doctors, volunteering at the hospital, writing his personal statement, and applying for jobs for the next year. He has applied to jobs both at hospitals and also at biotech companies. Thankfully, we received a good tax return this year, so we will be OK for a month or two until he finds a job. It has also been super nice to have a little time where his schedule is more relaxed and we can spend some much needed family time together.
